Comrades Weekend – 1000 Hills is the halfway mark!

It’s the Comrades Marathon this weekend – and it’s not too late to head for the hills – which is the halfway mark of this epic race.

Down Run.

It is the 96th running of the legendary Comrades Marathon this year – the world’s oldest and largest Ultramarathon. The Comrades Marathon was run for the first time on 24 May 1921 and has been run every year since, with the exception of World War II and over Covid, in 2020 & 2021. The race was the brainchild of WWI veteran Vic Clapham, to commemorate South African soldiers killed during the war. The direction of the race alternates each year between the “up” run (87 km) starting from Durban and the “down” run (now 90.184 km) starting from Pietermaritzburg.

It’s a down run this year.

For fans of the great race – overnighting in the 1000 Hills avoids the traffic congestion of commuting from either major city – and allows for great viewing along the way.

Great views of the race can be enjoyed a short stroll from Lindisfarne in the heart of Botha’s Hill.

The Valley of a 1000 Hills has a myriad options to suit every style, occasion and budget – and is geographically well placed for Comrades participants and supporters.

Its not too late to be impulsive and plan a little weekend getaway this weekend to feed off the energy, humanity, community and comradery of this quite extraordinary event. At a time when energy and optimism is in short supply – to plug into some of the good vibes from being up close and personal to the action, is a tonic!

Beds still available.

Although booking is brisk, there are still beds available. 1000 Hills B&B Association is a collective of a dozen or so accredited B&B’s who network closely together – all situated in the Kloof / Hillcrest / Botha’s Hill area. Their website is designed to process and send your request to all of the members, so this saves on having to contact each establishment separately for a quote.  Only members that have availability will respond to you.

It is a super efficient service which benefits all concerned. The Association prides itself in catering for pretty much the whole spectrum.
