Lockdown has meant a severe knock for the tourism and hospitality industries – but it is also creating some innovative solutions for businesses to try and navigate around protocols and legislation in order to keep their doors open and to keep themselves and their patrons safe.
Drive-through
Some of the 1000 Hills hospitality businesses are being super creative: As you drive past Talloula Celebrations in Botha’s Hill, staff are standing alongside the road with placards telling motorists about their drive through and takeaway service. Various Ocean Baskets – including in Hillcrest – are offering “road-house” style service, whereby their menu is available on personalised trays delivered to your car!
Your meal is served: Londiwe Sishi and David Chakala
1000 Hills CTO’s Jane Candow and I tried them out (in the name of research of course) and enjoyed a sundowner meal together – I had fish and chips and a pot of tea (regrettably the preferred chilled dry white wine is not currently on offer!) and Jane had a seared salmon salad and a cappuccino.
It’s quite a snug fit to accommodate two trays, and a bit of a balance to not spill the tea everywhere – but it was a fun, affordable, and novel experience. The staff were friendly and accommodating and we would both happily repeat the experience.
….And it feels good to do our bit in supporting local businesses during these rough times.
Mandela Day
The theme of this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July is “One hand can feed another”. 1000 Hills CTO is encouraging people to have a meal to match their budget by supporting any one of the 1000 Hills restaurants / eateries that offer take outs and Covid-compliant dining option at this time.
And Although many of the major hotels are unfortunately closed as managing the logistics of keeping patrons Covid-compliant is too tricky, there are many B&Bs – especially the smaller ones – which are fully operational and waiting to welcome guests and business travellers, as they can comfortably navigate around the legislation by providing private places to stay, relax and dine.
