Exploring the Valley of a 1000 Hills with Durban Safaris and Tours

Published by Shelldon Wells On 1 October, 2024

The Valley of a 1000 Hills has become one of the best places to stay and explore when visiting the holiday city of Durban; the airport is just 45 min away, the beaches 25 minutes away and you’re nearly half-way to the midlands. Durban Safaris and Tours have been guiding visitors from around the world and offer a range of tours that will help you discover the best of the Valley of a 1000 Hills and Durban.

My name is Shelldon Wells and I own and manage “Durban Safaris and Tours“, a small family sized tour operator based in Durban. I have lived in the Valley of a 1000 Hills for most of my adult life and personally consider the area to be the very bests place to experience the best of Zulu culture and tradition.

I have 3 great tours that will help you discover more about the Valley of a 1000 Hills, the Zulu people and of course the city of Durban;

  • Valley of a 1000 Hills Tours: wildlife and Zulu culture in a day trip
  • iSithumba: Discover more about the Zulu people with a village tour
  • Durban City Tour: Explore South Africa’s favourite holiday hot-spot

1. Valley of a 1000 Hills Tour: Experience Zulu Culture and Scenic Beauty

My Valley of a 1000 Hills Tour is great for visitors wanting to get a little of wildlife and culture all in one easy day. On this tour you will get to spend the morning visiting Tala Game Reserve where you’ll enjoy a 2 hour game drive exploring this wonderful game reserve that is home to not only rhino and hippo, but a plethora of many antelope species. And if you are passionate about birds, there are few places around Durban that offer the variety of bird species than Tala Game Reserve does.

After lunch the next visit it to PheZulu, situated on top of one of the most scenic viewpoints in the Valley of a 1000 Hills. Here you will be treated to a fantastic display of Zulu dancing that depicts the traditional courtship of the Zulu people. Afterwards you will have an opportunity to visit the small model Zulu village for a look back into the past into how Zulu people lived all those years ago.

Finally you will get to enjoy a tour of the nearby crocodile and reptile park and learn more about the other creatures that call Durban and the Valley of a 1000 Hills home. After a wonderful day, you will then get dropped off at your accommodation as part of my service.

2. iSithumba Day Tour: Explore Zulu Culture and Tradition

For those looking for a bit more connection with the Zulu people of the Valley of a 1000 Hills, my iSithumba Village Tour is the best way to go.

This full day tour starts with a visit to the village of iSithumba situated in the heart of the Valley of a 100 Hills. Here you will be guided around the village by one of the local people guides, Amimi, who lives in the village itself. Amimi will tell you about a life under apartheid in South Africa and you will learn more about the Zulu people and challenges they face in today’s modern society as they continue to honour their tradition and culture. This is an amazing 2 hour tour!

Net up is a spot of lunch and then you will visit PheZulu where you’ll get treated to the frenetic and traditional Zulu dance that depicts the courtship of the Zulu people!

3. Durban City Tour: The Perfect Complement to Your Valley Experience

If you’re looking to combine your visit to the Valley of a 1000 Hills with a deeper dive into Durban’s vibrant city life, my Durban City Tour is the perfect way to accomplish that. You’ll experience the diverse cultures that make Durban unique—from the bustling Indian markets where you can sample authentic street food, to visiting the oldest surviving botanical gardens in Africa.

You will also get to try Durban’s famous “bunny chow” as well as koeksisters, biltong and more.

This six-hour city tour offers a fantastic introduction to Durban’s highlights and includes pickup and drop-off from your accommodation, making it easy to explore Durban without any hassle.

As a local tour operator with years of experience, I’m committed to offering personalised and insightful tours that go beyond the typical tourist experience. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in local culture, explore natural landscapes, or embark on an adventure, I can tailor-make the perfect itinerary for you.
