Stonehouse: Garden Shop, Book Shop & Café

Published by Illa Thompson On 29 May, 2021

A perfect autumn Saturday found me browsing books, bromeliads, breadboards… and brunch at the quaint Stonehouse not far from Kearsney College.

“Its so beautiful here. Couldn’t you just sit here forever?” I overheard the woman at the neighboring table say to her companion. The two women sat on the deck in friendly silence, cappuccinos to hand, enjoying the spectacular views of the 1000 hills in front of them, and a rush of happy flowers alongside them. I would concur with her Saturday sentiments. The Stonehouse deck is indeed an idyllic place for a lazy morning brunch with a view.

Nursery

Stonehouse comprises the Garden Shop @ Lee Supa Scapes – a cheerful nursery, with endless rows of healthy plants and gardening goods. Their roses were in full bloom the morning I visited, showing off their brilliant colours in the sun.  They have a great selection of terracotta pots, plant stands and pot-holders to brighten up a wall, and lots of hanging baskets. Succulents and indigenous plants complement the colourful flowers, shrubs and ground covers. And a good selection of seeds, including the less obvious – like asparagus!

Books and Decor

Also on offer is a book room with books displayed like an-old school DVD hire for ease of browsing. Lots of books for children, fantasy, and for young adults, as well as self-help, biographies and inspirational titles. Alongside the books is a room boasting a beautiful display of gifts and décor items, scented by a fabulous fabric-spritzer.

A central water feature oozes calm in the al fresco garden café. Bustling waitresses deliver bright coloured milkshakes to busy children, while their parents enjoy good coffee and a catch up.

Cafe

Their menu is wholesome and simple – with brunches, salad, sandwiches and pizzas. Smashed avo on toast with feta and biltong was in demand while I was there, as was bar one and ice cream waffles.

All in all, a delightful place to watch the wonder of the hills on an autumn day.
