Commanding one of the most impressive views of the valley, Isithumba Adventure Centre, incorporating Isithumba Travel and Tours, offers an authentic Zulu cultural experience from a beautiful multi-purpose river-facing property.
Isithumba, is a small village situated in the valley of 1000 hills. It is one of the 11 villages of this area and a key community hub which participates in environmental, educational, community and social projects to improve the area it serves.
Isithumba comprises a large meeting room, dining room and break away rooms, outdoor areas, space for camping and residential rondavels. Bespoke catering is offered specialising in Zulu style cuisine using locally sourced ingredients.
They offer a series of facilitated adventures using the natural attractions on offer. Especially popular are canoeing, rafting and guided nature hiking. Abseiling and rock climbing is available on nearby iSithumba Rock. Also on offer are 4×4 trails – a three hour round trip along dirt roads, bush tracks and quarries under the guidance of nearby Monteseel Adventure.
For nature buffs, guided horseback rides or hikes will take clients through unspoilt terrain and the spectacular Mamba Gorge.
Team Building.
These outdoor adventure activities are especially popular as team building exercises or for group outings. Recently, post lockdown, a group from Ireland spent time doing adventure activities in Isithumba and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Through their Travel and Tours division, traditional village cultural guide walking tours are offered. This is especially popular with international and Western tourists who aren’t familiar with the history, culture and traditions found in an authentic village environment. The trip includes a consultation with the village healer and an audience with the village cultural leader. Trips to a nearby shebeen where guests will be welcomed by a traditional Zulu meal cooked by one of the village women, and overnight village stays, can be arranged on request.
ICDM.
Isithumba is also invested in local community development initiatives. They have developed the ICDM – Isithumba Community Development Movement. It is under the ICDM umbrella that after school homework classes are offered to occupy children living close by. They also offer opportunities in various youth sporting codes – soccer, table tennis and chess.
The management of Isithumba have developed a wide reaching network of support – including partners in Germany who through their “Sportgarten” initiative, support some of the sporting codes on offer, and also access international volunteers who come out and offer their time and skills to Isithumba and the nearby community.
Since 2010, Isithumba is also partnering with the proactive Green Corridor initiative which is a facilitation, networking and support structure which collaborates with local communities, creating multiple opportunities for members to participate in the health and welfare of their natural surroundings, understanding that healthy environments offer tangible benefits for food security, clean water and sanitation, well-being, self- employment and skills.
On-going, long-term partnerships with Green Corridors and its projects, has proven to be immensely rewarding in improving the quality of the environment within the communities they serve.
The fabulous and welcoming hosts are very clear on their vision: we want to give you the best experience of village life infused with exciting activities in our beautiful outdoor environment. Whether you are looking for a family outing, team building events, or would simply like to learn about Zulu life and culture, Isithumba is the natural place for that experience. Our mission is to get people to participate in and enjoy the outdoor activities and lifestyle that we have to offer.
